Administrators or teachers can use this class preference to choose which goal model each class will use. The goal model determines the types of goals and how students will see their goals and progress. The difficulty level model determines whether students receive average book level goals or are shown a reading range that the teacher can set. Teachers can also choose a goal model and reading range setting when they go to the Student Goals tab in the Accelerated Reader Record Book.

How to Get to This Preference
To get to the Reading Goals Model preference page, follow these steps:
- On the Home page, select your name in the top right corner. Then, choose Edit Preferences from the menu that opens.
You can also select Accelerated Reader Independent Reading on the Home page and then choose Preferences from the popup menu. - Select Reading Goals Model under the Class Preferences on the Preferences page.
Goal Models Available
Three goal models are available for your class; see the descriptions below. The model that you choose will determine how you set goals and what your students see when they view their goals and progress.
- Grade K-2 Goal Model: Students earn tokens when they pass quizzes, and those tokens count toward character badges. Teachers select the student Star test scores (or grade-level equivalents) to base goals on; then, they set the expected amount of daily reading time. Based on these selections, the software calculates each student's goal for passed quizzes for the entire school year (not individual marking periods). Goals are based on the number of tokens required for each badge because students see the goals in terms of how many badges they need to earn. For more information, see Setting Up K-2 Goals in the Accelerated Reader Record Book.
- Grade 3-5 Goal Model: Students have goals for their average percent correct on quizzes, the average book level of books they read or a reading range, and the number of points they earn. These goals can be set for any school marking period or the school year. By default, book level or reading range goals and point goals are based on students' first Star test of the school year (if available), the low end of each student's Zone of Proximal Development, and 15 minutes of daily reading; teachers can edit these values and change individual goals. Students see their points goal in terms of a rocket heading toward a planet, with a celebration when they meet their goal. Students see their average book level and average percent correct goals on gauges so they can compare their achievement to the goal; if you use a reading range instead of an average book level goal, students see a message about how well they are finding books that are right for them.
- Grade 6+ Goal Model: Teachers set goals for older students just as they do in the Grade 3-5 model. Students also see their average percent correct and average book level or reading range goals in the same way as grade 3-5 students; however, the points goal is shown on a bar graph instead of with the rocket animation.
Choosing the Goal Model for Your Classes
Who can do this with default user permissions?
District-level Administrators, School-level Administrators, Teachers
- If you have access to more than one school, use the Schools drop-down list to choose the school whose classes you want to set the preference for.
- Select the Classes drop-down list to choose the class(es) that you want to set the preference for. Then, check the classes. If you want to set the preference for all of your classes, click Select All. (The link changes to Clear All when you do this; select that link if you want to clear all selections.)
- In the row for each class, use the first drop-down list to choose which goal model to use. (The default setting for each class is the grade 3-5 goal model.)
Use the second drop-down list to choose whether the class will use reading ranges to guide student reading or average book level goals.
If you prefer to use the same setting for all of the classes listed, first, select Set All above the table.
Then, in the window that opens, choose a setting in each drop-down list. Then, select Apply to All. - When you've finished choosing the preference settings, select Save Changes. Then, select < Back to go back to the list of preferences.
