The Reading Overview Dashboard gives you information about your students' achievement on Star Reading tests and their Accelerated Reader work. (Star Early Literacy tests are not included on this Dashboard.)
How to Get to the Reading Overview Dashboard
- On the Home page, select Reports; then, in the menu that opens, select either Accelerated Reader / Reading Practice or Star / Assessment
- On the Reports page, do one of the following:
- On the Accelerated Reader / Reading Practice tab, select Reading Overview Dashboard in the Monitor Progress section of the page.
- On the Star / Assessment tab, select Reading Overview Dashboard in the Growth & Progress section of the page.
Choosing the Class (or Group) and Students
To start using the dashboard, use the drop-down lists at the top of the page to choose the school, class or group, and timeframe for which you want to view data.
Select the first drop-down to choose the school, teacher, class or group, and student(s).
In the columns that open, choose the data that you want to see.
Choose the school (if necessary), teacher, class or group, and students. At the top of the Students column, you can choose whether to view data for all students in the selected class/group or to select a specific student. If you choose to select a student, click the student that you want to include. (You can search the items in a column by clicking within that column and then typing Ctrl+F or control-F on the keyboard.) When you're done, select Apply.
The groups that are available are custom groups that you have added in Renaissance software.
In the Classes and Groups column, you will see the class listed, and then each group for a class. For example, if Class A has custom groups set up named Blue Group and Green Group, you would see Class A listed alone, then Class A - Blue Group and Class A - Green Group.
Choose the Time Period
Use the second drop-down list to choose the time period that you want to view data for: all time, the current school year, the current marking period, the last 30 days, or the last 7 days.
Which marking period is used?
Marking periods are set up for the software when administrators choose their name and then Manage Apps & Users. The Reading Overview Dashboard only recognizes marking periods that have the type set to "Marking Period" (not other types such as quarters or semesters).
In the Reading Overview Dashboard, when you choose Marking Period as the time period to view data for, the Dashboard uses the current marking period that has the type set to Marking Period.
You can't select Marking Period in the Reading Overview Dashboard if no school marking periods are set up.
Star Reading - Growth and Achievement
If none of the selected students have taken a Star Reading assessment within the timeframe you selected, this chart will show a message explaining that there is insufficient data.
If students have taken a Star Reading assessment, this chart shows you the Star Reading Scaled Score for the student(s), when tests were taken, where the scores fall in the benchmark categories, and the growth for the student(s) in the selected time period (using Student Growth Percentile). Note: Star scores are shown on the Enterprise scale, not Unified, regardless of preference settings. Only Star Reading scores appear on this Dashboard; Star Early Literacy scores are not shown.
The benchmarks used on the graph are those that are selected in the top right corner of the graph; you can use the drop-down list to select other available benchmarks.
The benchmark categories that the scores fall within are shown by the gray shading in the graph.
About the Fan Graph
Test Scores on the Graph
The large circle with a score (510 in the example above) shows the student's first test of this school year (typically a fall test); if you have chosen a group or class, this is the students' median score for the first test. This is the starting point for student growth for the year. The small blue circles show other tests taken within this school year (or medians for different test windows for a class or group). The diamond represents the student's Student Growth Percentile (or the median SGP for a group or class).
If the circle is white with a red outline, the most recent test found is from before this school year.
After the first score of this school year, you will see a green, yellow, and red "fan" like the one shown above. (If some of the fan is white, it is because you have selected a smaller timeframe, so only the portion of the fan that is in that timeframe is showing the colors.) The colors on the graph represent the students' growth:
- The green portion shows high growth for this student or group (66th to 95th Student Growth Percentile).
- The yellow shows typical growth (35th to 65th SGP).
- The red shows low growth (5th to 34th SGP).
The student scores typically fall within these categories, showing you the rate of growth as measured by the scores. To increase the likelihood that a student will show high or typical growth, consider additional instruction or improvements in instructional strategies to meet the student's needs.
If the color categories are different sizes, it is because there is a difference in the range of Scaled Scores associated with the SGP for each range. If the red category is larger than the yellow or green categories, it doesn't mean there is a greater likelihood that the student(s) will experience low growth versus moderate or high growth. It also does not mean that the student(s) will have a decrease in Scaled Score. The difference means that there are more Scaled Scores associated with SGPs in that range.
Projected and Predicted Growth and Target
Also on the graph, you will see dashed lines showing the expected/target path through the end of the school year in order to reach state proficiency (catch up, keep up, move up target), the Projected score based on a Student Growth Percentile of 50, and the Predicted score based on the student's latest Star Reading test and current trajectory.
Target: The Target shows what Scaled Score the student needs to achieve this year to be on track to reach or maintain proficiency within 3 years (based on state benchmarks). The Target takes into account the first Star Reading test of the school year (typically fall), the 3-year timeframe, and the minimum Scaled Score required for proficiency. (Not all students will take 3 years to reach the target.) The Target does not change after the first test of the school year. The Target is not shown for students who have not taken a Star Reading test in the past 18 months.
Projected Score: Projected scores show the Scaled Score the student would attain if the student experienced typical growth (SGP of 50). The calculation is based on the first fall Star Reading test of the school year and a prior score in a testing window within the past 18 months (such as the previous spring score) to establish a new spring Scaled Score projection based on an SGP of 50. This score does not change as the school year goes on. This score is not shown for students who have not taken a Star Reading test in the past 18 months.
Predicted Score: Like the Projected Score, this is based on typical growth (SGP of 50). This calculation is based on the most recent Star Reading test and a prior score in a testing window within the past 18 months (such as the previous spring score). The Predicted score is adjusted based on the latest Star test score and an assumption of typical growth (SGP of 50). This score is not shown for students who have not taken a Star Reading test in the past 18 months.
Viewing All-Time Data
If you have chosen to see All-Time data, you will see a graph like the one below. The white circles show the spring Star Reading test in each school year. The arrows between those scores show the growth from year to year; the color indicates whether growth is high (green), typical (yellow), or low (red). (If the line is black, the Student Growth Percentile has not yet been calculated.) The number in the diamond shows the Student Growth Percentile for the growth from one year to the next.
Above the graph, you can select Scaled Score median comparisons that you want to add to the graph:
- group median (available if you have selected a group, then chosen to view data for a single student within that group)
- class median (available if you have chosen to view data for a group within a class or for one student)
- school median
Note: District comparisons are not available.
When you view data for an entire class, you can choose a school comparison.
When you select a comparison, you will see the symbol for that comparison on the graph, with a line showing the median scores and growth.
Below the comparisons that you can select, you will see the difference between the student's Student Growth Percentile and the median for the group, class, school, and district (depending on the comparisons available). In the example below, the green +1 below the class median means the student's Student Growth Percentile is 1 point above the median for the class and represents high growth, while the red -24 below the district median means the student's SGP is 24 points below the district median.
The student's current Student Growth Percentile is always used no matter what timeframe you choose to view, so if you are viewing All-Time data, note that the Student Growth Percentiles are not based on that timeframe.
If a student is enrolled in more than one school in the district, the Student Growth Percentile values displayed in the District Reports and the Reading Overview Dashboard may be inconsistent.
Accelerated Reader Data
On the right side of the page, you will see an overview of the students' work in Accelerated Reader. You will see No Data if the student has not done any reading or quizzing in the time period that you selected. The data is measured by student performance on Accelerated Reader Reading Practice Quizzes.
AR Practice Quiz Percent Correct
The AR Practice Quiz % Correct metric shows you the average % correct on Reading Practice Quizzes in Accelerated Reader for the time period you've selected. The 85% target is not an individual goal set in Accelerated Reader; it is simply the expected level for all students.
AR Practice Points
For Reading Practice Quizzes in Accelerated Reader, you'll see the number of points earned in this time period (or the average points earned per student if you are viewing data for a class or group). If you are viewing data for one marking period and the teacher has set points goals, when you view data for individual students, the green line shows the Accelerated Reader goal that the teacher has set. For a class or group, the green line shows an average.
AR Practice % Within ZPD
This shows the percentage of practice reading that was done within the student's Zone of Proximal Development (based on the ATOS levels of the reading material). Only titles for which students have passed Reading Practice Quizzes are included. The recommended target (60%) is shown by the green area at the top of the graph. Note: This graph only shows data if you have set goals for students in the class or group in Accelerated Reader.
AR Practice % Nonfiction
This shows the percentage of nonfiction reading done for passed Reading Practice Quizzes. If you have selected the whole class, the average is shown.
The green area in the graph shows the recommended percentage of nonfiction for students based on their grade and the type of reading. The table below shows a suggested nonfiction ratio for each grade for reading practice and instruction. The combined ratio is a recommendation on all reading that comes from Common Core State Standards.
To find resources to use for instruction for the selected students, select Plan Instruction in the top-right corner of the page.
You will go to Planner, where you can choose skills and resources and generate a Lesson Plan.
