The Student Goals tab on the Student Details page shows you the student's progress toward reading goals. This version of the tab shows student progress toward goals set using the K-2 model (badges). For students whose classes are using the models for grades 3-5 or grades 6 and up, see Student Details - Student Goals (Grades 3-5 and 6+).
How to Go to the Student Goals Tab on the Student Details Page
Who can do this with default permissions?
District Level Administrators, District Dashboard Owners, District Staff, School Level Administrators, Teachers
If you have a Home page tile like the first example below, to open the Accelerated Reader Record Book, select Accelerated Reader 360 Independent Reading; then, select Record Book & Goals in the menu. If your home page is Renaissance Next, select AR under My Apps on the left side of the page as shown in the second example below; then, select Record Book & Goals in the menu that opens.
If you have access to more than one school and/or more than one class, use the drop-down lists at the top of the page to choose the school and class whose information you want to see.
The Student Goals tab is selected by default; if you've selected a different tab, select Student Goals to see a class view of your students' current reading goals.
Select a specific student to see the student's progress towards goals for this school year.
Changing the Selected Student
Use the Student drop-down list at the top of the page to view a different student's information. You cannot change the class or school in the Student Details, but you can change them if you select < Back to All Students to go back to the class view.
Viewing the Student's Goals
The Student Goals tab shows you the student's totals for this school year, including the average percent correct on Reading Practice, Other Reading, and Article Quizzes, the number of passed quizzes compared to the goal, and the reading range with the percentage of reading the student has done below, within, and above that range.
If the student's average percent correct is above 80%, you'll see a green arrow pointing up ; if it's below, you'll see a red arrow pointing down

Under the number of quizzes passed, you will see if the student has not passed any quizzes yet. If the student is passing quizzes at a rate that makes it likely the goal will be met, you will see
. If the student is not passing quizzes fast enough to meet the goal at the current rate, you will see

to see how many quizzes the student should have passed by this time. If the student meets the goal exactly, you will see
. If the student passes more quizzes than is required for the goal, you will see
. You will also see the percentage of the goal that the student has completed; you can compare this percentage to the percent of the marking period that has passed, which is shown below the "Reading Goals" heading; for K-2 goals, the marking period is the entire school year (based on the first and last days for students, which are set up when the administrator adds the school year).
For reading range (if used), you'll see how much of the student's reading included books and articles with book levels below the reading range, within it, or above it. You'll also see a status message:

Editing the Goals
If you want to change the student's goal, select Edit Goal.
To change a range, click in the fields and update the values. If no ranges have been added, select Add under the English or Spanish heading; then, enter the range. For ATOS book levels, you can enter whole numbers or numbers with one decimal place (such as "5" or "5.4"). For Lexile® measures, enter whole numbers for the goal (omit the "L") or "BR" for all BR levels. Below the fields, if the student has passed quizzes during the goal time period, you'll see the student's actual average book levels in English and Spanish, and if the student has taken a Star test, you'll see the student's Zone of Proximal Development and the test date.
If you want to change the quizzes passed goal, select Goal Calculator under the Save Goals button. Use the Daily Reading Time drop-down list to change the amount of daily reading practice the student is expected to complete during the goal time period; this helps determine how many quizzes the student should pass. Then, if the student has taken more than one English Star Reading test this school year, use the Baseline Test drop-down list to choose which reading range to base the student's goals on; the ranges may be shown as Zones of Proximal Development or Lexile® ranges. The ranges shown are based on the student's test scores; you will also see the test date next to each range. Note: If the student took multiple tests on the same day, only the latest test for that date will be shown in the drop-down list.
If the student has not taken a Star Reading test, enter the student's grade level/equivalent (in grade.month format) that you want to base goals on.
Then, use the Reading Range drop-down list to choose the type of goal that you want to set: Full ZPD (based on the baseline test or the grade equivalent), Moderate (the lower end of the student's Zone of Proximal Development or Lexile® range), or Ambitious (the upper end of the student's ZPD or Lexile® range).
If you want to update the Quizzes Passed goal, check the Update Quiz Goal box. (If the student does not have a Star test, the check box is under the daily reading time, and the update is based on daily reading time and grade.)
If your class is using Lexile® measures instead of ATOS book levels (as set in the Lexile® Goals preference), you can also use the Goal Calculator to set the Spanish Reading Range. If the student has taken a Star Reading Spanish test, you can select a Spanish baseline test and then select a Reading Range just as you did for English. If the student has not taken a Star Reading Spanish test, you can enter a Grade Equivalent and select the Reading Range as for English.
When you're done, select Apply to update the student's goals. When you go back to the Student Details page, select Save Goal.
Viewing the Student's Badge Progress
While teachers view student goals in terms of the number of quizzes the student will pass, students see their goals in terms of badges.
On the student detail page, below the student totals, you'll see more information about the student's progress toward the badges. You'll see each badge that the student has earned or is working toward as well as the goal area that each badge is part of. In the example below, the student has worked on 3 out of the 11 badges that make up their goal. The student has earned one 0.5-point badge and is working on another; the student is also working toward a 1-point badge.
The number of points that a book is worth determines which set of badges a book counts toward:
- Greenwood Glen is for 0.5-point books. In this area, 6 tokens are required to earn each badge.
- Timber Park is for 1-point books. In this area, 3 tokens are required to earn each badge.
- Pinnacle Peak is for 2-point books. In this area, 2 tokens are required to earn each badge.
The goal areas that are shown to the student depend on the student's Star score or grade level, and the goals themselves are based on that information plus the amount of daily reading practice that you select for the student. In the example above, the student needs to earn 8 badges in Greenwood Glen and 3 badges in Timber Park.
For students, Boundary Wilds is for books that don't apply to the goal. It gives students a way to see the quizzes they passed for those books, but it is not shown on the Student Goals tab of the Student Details page since those books aren't part of the goal. The books in Boundary Wilds may be worth more than 2 points, or they may simply have a point value that doesn't apply to the goal. For example, if a student takes a quiz on a 2-point book, but the student's goal is for 0.5-point books and 1-point books, the book will be shown in Boundary Wilds.
Select Show Details next to a badge to see more information about the quizzes the student passed while working toward that badge. (For the badge that's in progress, details are shown by default.)
When you show details, you'll see the student's percent correct score on each quiz, the book level, the quiz date, the title, and the author. Next to the percent correct, you'll see a trophy if the student answered all questions correctly or a star
if the student got some questions wrong.
If the student is still working on a badge, you'll see blank rows for the remaining quizzes the student needs to pass to finish the badge (see the example above).
Viewing the Student's Statistics
Regardless of the tab selected on the Student Details page, at the top of the page, you'll see the following information for the selected student:
- the average book level of the books the student has passed quizzes for this school year (shown as either an ATOS book level or a Lexile® level, depending on the setting of the class Lexile® Goals preference)
- the number of books the student has read this school year (based on the number of passed Reading Practice Quizzes and Other Reading Quizzes)
- the number of articles the student has read this school year (based on the number of passed article quizzes)
- the percentage of reading that has been nonfiction (based on the points earned for fiction and nonfiction)
- the number of words the student has read based on passed quizzes
Printing and Reports
If you want to print the page, select the print icon in the gray bar toward the top of the page.
If you want to go to the Reports page, select the Reports icon in the gray bar.
Other Tabs on the Student Details Page
To see the quizzes this student has taken, select the All Quizzes tab.
To see more information on a bilingual student's reading in Spanish and English, select the Biliteracy tab.
