Book and Article Ideas
On the Reading tab, students will see suggestions for articles they can read now. If your school has myON, students may also see ideas for books they can read now in myON.
If you use the Article Quiz Availability preference to turn off articles for a school, students will not see the "Articles you can read now" area. If you make articles available, some lower-grade students may not see article ideas. If students have taken Star Reading tests, only those whose Zone of Proximal Development includes book levels 3.6 or above will see article ideas. If students have not taken Star Reading tests, only students in grades 3 and above will see article ideas.
Under Discover Books, students will see Top Book Ideas for You, Nonfiction Book Ideas, and Award-Winning Book Ideas. Students will see a series of book covers below each heading (as shown below). To see more ideas for any row of books or articles, students can select See more > to go to a full page of ideas.
Students who have taken a Star Reading Spanish assessment, who have already passed a Spanish AR quiz, or who have a Spanish reading range goal set will see top book ideas in both Spanish and English. The Spanish book ideas will include a reading range if the student has taken a Star Reading Spanish test and the Lexile®* Goals preference has been set to show Lexile® measures. Note: If students have taken a Star Reading Spanish test and/or a Spanish AR quiz by accident, and you don't want them to see Spanish book ideas, deactivate the Spanish activities to remove the Spanish book ideas from the student's page; see the steps for deactivating AR quizzes and deactivating Star Reading Spanish tests. If a student has a Spanish reading range and doesn't speak Spanish, you can remove the reading range goal for the student in the Accelerated Reader Record Book.
Under Discover Articles, students will see top article ideas. (If your school has articles turned off in the Article Quiz Availability preference, students don't see the Discover Articles area.)
Accelerated Reader suggests books for students based on:
- the books they have quizzed on so far
- their Zone of Proximal Development or Lexile® Range based on their Star Reading tests (if students have not taken the Star Reading test, this is based on the students' grade) or the reading range if you are setting reading range goals in the Record Book
- their Interest Level
- books that other students are reading (see the What Kids Are Reading Report)
Students can select one of the book (or article) covers to see more information, including the title, author, book level, fiction/nonfiction classification, quiz number, points, whether Recorded Voice is available (shown with ), and a description. The information can help students decide whether they would like to read one of these books or articles next.
Students can also start a quiz, read an article, or read a myON book.
If the administrator makes some books or articles unavailable to students, those quizzes will not show up for students in book ideas. It may take up to 5 minutes for books or articles you have hidden to be hidden for students.
Searching for Books or Articles to Read
Besides searching for books and articles by name, author, keyword, or quiz number, students can also search for books or articles that they can read now or by fiction/nonfiction, book level, points, or interest level.
First, the student selects Help me find a book under the Search field.
Students can choose to use more than one of the ways to search: for example, students could search for books or articles of interest to grades 4 through 8 and with ATOS book levels of 4 (which will find books from 4.0 to 4.9).
To search for books or articles they can read now, students select either myON Books (if it is available for your school) or Articles. (If your school has articles turned off in the Article Quiz Availability preference, students don't have the Articles button.)
To search for fiction and/or nonfiction books, students select one of the options under "Type". (Students can select both; selecting neither also finds both types of books.)
To search for books by language, students select English or Spanish under "Language."
To search by reading level (book level), the student selects either Use ATOS or Use Lexile®. (The default is the level chosen in the Lexile® Goals preference.) If the student chooses ATOS, they can select "All" or any number from 0 to 10+. 0 through 9 include all of the levels in that range; for example, 1 would include book levels of 1.0 through 1.9. 10+ includes books with levels 10.0 or higher. If the student chooses Lexile® measures, the student uses a drop-down list to choose a range of book levels (or BR). A book level search can be helpful for students who are looking for books or articles in their Zone of Proximal Development or Lexile® Range.
To search by point value, the student selects one of the values under "Points." Only books worth that number of points will be found. In the example below, the student is searching for books worth a possible 5 points. (Note: All articles are worth 1 point.) A points search can be helpful for students who are working toward points goals.
To search by interest level, the student chooses one or more grade ranges under "Interest Level". Each range finds books that are most appropriate for students in those grades based on the book content.
Some preferences affect the default choices for students. ATOS is the default book level type unless the class Lexile® Goals preference has Lexile® measures selected. If you set up interest level restrictions for your students, the filters will default to the interest levels that you have allowed. Students can still select the book level type and interest levels that are not selected by default. However, if students attempt to take a quiz on books with other levels, they may not be allowed to do so unless a monitor password override is allowed.
The student selects Search to look for books or articles that match the selected options. The matching titles will be listed. In the search results, the search options will be shown on the left side of the page; the student can make changes and select Search again as needed.
If the student decides not to use the search options, the student selects Go Back.
Any options that the student has chosen remain in effect until the student makes different choices (or until the student selects Go Back or selects Reading at the top of the page).
