Students see the reading ranges ranges in their book ideas and on the student progress page in Accelerated Reader. For students who read in both English and Spanish, you can set separate reading ranges for each language.
If you would like to use reading ranges instead of average book levels now, when you choose or change the goal model for a class, check the box labeled "Use Reading Range Instead of Book Level Goal." You can also use the Reading Goals Model preference to switch to reading ranges.
When you use the goal model for grades 3-5 or grade 6 and up, there are three Reading Practice goals that you can set for your students: average percent correct, points, and either average book level or reading range. (The K-2 goal model does not include average book level goals.)
A student's average book level is the average level of the books on which the student passed Reading Practice Quizzes, Other Reading (textbook) Quizzes, and Article Quizzes during the goal time period. Accelerated Reader calculates the average book level as a weighted average based on word count (to take into consideration not just difficulty of the text but also the amount of time spent reading).
The class Lexile®* Goals preference determines whether average book level goals are set using ATOS book levels or Lexile® measures. If Lexile® measures are used, the Record Book's Student Goals tab will show you the student's average Lexile® measure.
When setting a goal for average book level, consider the student's reading level and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) or Lexile® Range, which is a range of book levels that are neither too easy nor too challenging. We recommend setting the average book level as a minimum goal - at or near the lower end of the ZPD or Lexile® Range.
