Book level measures the readability of the text of a book or other reading material.
The ATOS Readability Formula for Books determines the book level by using full-text computer scans of all the words in a book. ATOS does not analyze content, age appropriateness, or literary merit. For more information, see ATOS Readability Formula for Books.
When the program calculates the possible points for a Reading Practice Quiz, it uses the book level and the word count in the calculation.
Administrators and teachers with default user permissions can use the class Lexile®* Goals preference to change the current book level from ATOS to Lexile® measure. In Accelerated Reader, some pages for teachers and students show both ATOS book levels and Lexile® measures regardless of the preference setting; however, the preference does determine what teachers will see in the Accelerated Reader Record Book, for reading range goals, in the Book Level Restrictions preference, and in some reports. (In reports, you can often select the scale to use.) The preference also affects which book level type students see on pages that only show one type.
You can set up restrictions for students based on book level using the Book Level Restrictions preference. This preference restricts the book levels that students can take quizzes for, but students can still find other quizzes, and the individual restrictions can be overridden using the monitor password for reading quizzes.
